IT WAS A GREAT WEEKEND FOR WOMEN AT THE BOXOFFICE

"Eye in the sky!"
It was a good weekend for women at the specialty box office. The Helen Mirren thriller "Eye in the Sky" and Sally Field comedy "Hello, My Name is Doris" both performed well, according to Deadline, while "10 Cloverfield Lane" proved that big studio films with women at their center can appeal to wide audiences.

HOW JAKE GYLLENHAAL WON SXSW WITH NOTHING BUT HIS WEIRDO CHARM

HOLLYWOOD'S BIGGEST DIRECTORS WANT TO BRING NEW MOVIES STRAIGHT TO YOUR LIVING ROOM

(Frazer Harrison/Getty Images)

Seemingly out of nowhere, a new service called Screening Room could soon let consumers watch new movies the same day they hit theaters — for a hefty price. On Wednesday, Variety reported that movie studios and the Sean Parker-backed startup have been in negotiations to help make the service a reality.

HOW YOU SHOULD RESEARCH YOUR NEXT LENS PURCHASE

To go with a set of 3 prime lenses versus a mid-range zoom was not an intentional decision. It happened over the course of time. Today the lens that is not in my toolbox is the 24-70 2.8 mid-range zoom. It is on my bucket list, but I’m not in a hurry. The reason? The 28mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.8 are awesome prime lenses that deliver quality images with just about every shoot.

DOCUMENTARY STORYTELLING: THE DRAMA OF REAL LIFE

Documentary filmmakers, no less than dramatic screenwriters, strive to tell strong, often character-driven stories that have a beginning, middle and end, with something at stake, rising tension, and a narrative arc that keeps viewers actively engaged. Unlike dramatists, however, nonfiction filmmakers can't invent characters and plot points, but must instead find them in the raw material of real life.

GAME OF THRONES' AUTHOR SAYS NEXT BOOK IS NOT FINISHED YET

Helen Sloan/courtesy of HBO

From George R.R. Martin

"You wanted an update. Here's the update. You won't like it."
Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to type those words. You're disappointed, and you're not alone. My editors and publishers are disappointed, HBO is disappointed, my agents and foreign publishers and translators are disappointed... but no one could possibly be more disappointed than me. For months now I have wanted nothing so much as to be able to say, "I have completed and delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER" on or before the last day of 2015.

Matthew Heineman's documentary Cartel Land moves far beyond the realistic yet calibrated fictions of what we might think we know about the drug wars depicted in films like Traffic or Sicario.

An Image from the True/False movie "The Other Side". (True/False)
The True/False film festival took place last weekend, and although to many that might conjure up little more than thoughts of a high school multiple-choice test, for those who follow nonfiction films, it means something larger.

CLOSING THE GENDER GAP IS EVERYONE'S BUSINESS

Women may be graduating from U.S. colleges faster than men (3:2), but American women still earn just 77 cents for every dollar that men earn, and fill only 14% of Fortune 500 boardroom seats!

TOP WOMEN'S FILM FESTIVALS

Women’s film festivals aim to provide a true perception of women, whether they are victorious or defeated. With an industry that is dominated by males, these film festivals have turned into a global project by, for and about women.
The criteria I used to select these top film festivals are similar to those that could be used for general film festivals. The one defining quality is that the festival, in fact, promotes what it actually is. Women’s film festivals began due to the lack of female voice within the film industry. To combat this hindrance, their own film festival was designed...

THERE ARE NO RULES': BEHIND THE SCENES OF GAME OF THRONES' SEASON 6

With Game of Thrones' April 26 Season 6 premiere date fast approaching, there's still no trailer to speak of. But HBO did throw us a meaty bone today.
In the below behind-the-scenes featurette, three cinematographers detail the major challenges they faced depicting the world of Westeros. As we learned from speaking to  two GOT cinematographers at Berlinale this year, the show operates on a rotating schedule of DPs; depending on the variety of locations, the final cut of an episode can feature the intercut work of many different DPs. This make working on the show a uniquely collaborative experience.  "It's completely different from working on a single drama, where you're working with the same DP and director for months," David Worley, B camera operator, explains in the video. "It's much more interesting, because everyone's got a different approach."

SHOOTING VIDEO WITH DSLR

You get the most control over your video when you shoot in Manual mode, usually indicated by the letter M on your top settings dial. The Manual setting gives you control over the aperture and shutter speed. Shooting this way takes a little bit of work, but it’s worth it, and after you experiment a bit, you’ll start to get a good feel for the settings!
Here are some important things to keep in mind.

YOU'RE WORTH MORE THEN $100 A DAY!

The best part about a career in film, video, or television production isn’t the pay. We have a great job that makes other people jealous. Many of us get to travel, work with celebrities, and have our work seen by thousands or even millions. We get to express our creativity, and when we’re done, the things we’ve worked on can make an audience feel something. That’s a perk that doesn’t come with every job.

Something you can get from just any job? A paycheck. We’re paid for our work because, well, it’s work! We get paid to think, to decide, to plan, to anticipate...
